Don't know about "the best", but if you've never checked out THE BAD PLUS do so at your first opportunity.

Jazz trio of Bass, Piano & Drums of the highest quality musicianship. They play many of their own tunes but are best known for serious kick ass covers of rock tunes ranging from Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to Rush's "Tom Sawyer" and even "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath that will blow you away.

Live they're eve better. Check out "These Are the Vistas" (their debut album), as well as "Give", and anything else you can find. You won't be disappointed.

As far as conventional 3-piece rock bands go I'd give the nod to The Police and Morphine.

Not many of the folks of our "group" give the Police much respect, I've found...but I agree completely. Sting, before he was solo, and SCop, were/are outstanding musical talents, I always thought.

Thx; of course, you well know I place EC + JB + GB as "top five" in their respective instrumental domains, but likewise, I think one can easily argue for Sting + SC as top five...I just can't do it for AS as much as I think he's darn good.

My older kid was a huge Police fan (come to think of it, so was/is kid # 2--even has a tattoo about them...ahem). In any case, it led to my having been exposed to a great deal of live shows, and there's one where the energy and such seems to match CREAM/DEAD/etc style shows (ie, they really seemed to take the world by storm). I know others argue "too pop" or "not punk enough" or whatever, but I think they were at the top of the heap, early 80s/late 70s, easily...
